The latest offering at the Waterfront Playhouse, Patrick Marber's "Closer' presents Key West's theater audiences with performances from established talent as well as exciting newcomers to southernmost stage. Produced by the Key West players, the award-winning drama runs through March 25.
A meditation on contemporary romance and morality, "Closer" follows four adult characters two women, two men through a series of dark seductions. From carnal obsession to deceitful internet sex, their couplings are dissected by Marber's sharp wit and intelligence. The underside of the relationships is exposed.
Director Scott Gilmore saw "Closer" as an opportunity to mix some new chemistry at the playhouse, and selected his cast with that in mind.
"This is an adult play, with explicit language and situations," he said, adding that it is not for the faint-hearted. "The casting in these roles is critical."
Stage veteran Vanessa McCaffrey plans Anna, a photographer who is separated from her husband when she meets Dan, an obituary writer-turned-novelist.
Down from Miami, Kathy Kurtz plays the waifish stripper Alice, Dan's muse and sometime lover.
Michael J. Gibney, who plays Dan, is making his Key West theater debut.
Also making his first appearance on Key West stage, Terry Horsely plays Larry, the dermatologist.
The cast is directed by Key West Players' artistic director, Scott Gilmore. Gilmore directed last year's critically-lauded production of Marber's first play, "Dealer's Choice" also at the Waterfront. The production's reviews led to permission to produce "Closer," which had a successful Broadway run last summer and was named Best Foreign Play by the New York Drama Critics Circle.
