Alice's at La Te Da

by Valerie Ridenour

Do you like to have dinner after the theatre? You can do so at Alice's at La Te Da. I made a 10:30 reservation and was pleasantly surprised to find even the nightly specials still available. I was terribly hungry, so I began with a smoky corn chowder with apple red onion relish. This was so delicious! My partner had the Vodka Conch Bisque, which was also extraordinary.

We progressed to entrees. His was Macadamia Coconut crusted shrimp served with Honey Wasabi, papaya ginger chutney and coconut rice. I had Dijon Herb Crusted Rack of New Zealand Lamb. This was definitely the right choice. It was served with a Port, pear, and mint infused demi glace which was beyond superlative, red skinned mashed potatoes and sauteed asparagus. I have never had better lamb. It was medium rare with a luscious crunchy crust. Everything was so good, we threw manners out the window and happily tasted from each other's plates.

We almost passed on dessert, but finaly decided to share one. If you haven't had Alice's Cappuccino Bread Pudding with White Russian Chantilly cream, let me advise you to do so at your earliest oppertunity. It is served warm and has chocolate chips and other goodies tucked inside. My coffee was excellent, and I am very particular about my favorite beverage. You can order a fine wine or cocktails if you choose. With servings so large, I couldn' t possibly have found room for another sip or bite. I felt sated , yet comfortable.

This is a menu you won't find anywhere else. Alice's culinary creations have earned her awards, rightfully so. She is as good a chef as you'll find with original ideas that will surprise and delight your palate. Her breakfast menu goes far beyond eggs Benedict. Have you ever had a Magic Mushroom and Goat cheese omelet? This is created from Portobello, Shitaki, and Porcini mushrooms and Sonoma County goat cheese. Luncheon offers a divine Monte Christo sandwich which would fill up a giant.

As Alice is my next door neighbor, I was thrilled to find out all the great things I've read about her were not only true, but understated. I learned that she was stranded in Chicago, but I didn't worry about her. As her very efficient and gracious staff sgreed, Alice will find some mischeif to get into wherever she is. This is true. Our fabulous chef is also a fun person.
