Papa's Restaurant is a wonderful people-watching place. It's on Duval in the rock block and is reminiscent of a Parisian Boulevard cafe. You can gaze at the passing parade while enjoying a variety of culinary goodies and listening to our premier steel drum player, Melvin Newton.
You are probably familiar with pan players who do Bob Marley to death and are loud and raucous. Melvin is different. He didn't study steel drums in his island home. He taught himself, resulting in a unique and wonderful style that is all his own.
He began with a series of beautiful arpeggios. This takes lots of talent and practice. Melvin is a true musician, playing from his own mind rather than from a repertoire of overworked reggae tunes. Melvin's playing goes way beyond the island favorites, into jazz, soca, even a classical feel.
He plays mostly original music that is beautiful and soothing, with a gentle island lilt that will smooth out your wrinkled psyche. This is a soft, gentle sound that will make you fall in love with Key West Carribean music.
Melvin's technique is amazing. His improvisation is magical. His gentle personality will set you at ease and have you swaying to his island rhythms.
He is a fine singer too. He does an occasional Bob Marley tune. Tonight's was, "This Is My Message To You". When Mr. Newton tells you, "don't worry, `bout a thing", you won't.
I watched people respond to Melvin Newton. A diverse crowd goes by, upscale tourists, working folks, deadheads, every type you can imagine. They all stopped to listen for a moment to the sweet sound of the steel pans.
Melvin's music is melodic. He has an instrumental CD available, "Toko Irie, It's All About You". Titles like "Dreaming Of Home", "Memories Of Mallory", "Please remember Me", and "Leaving With the Wind" will transport you into another world, a place of inner peace.
Go hear Melvin Newton. You can thank me when you see me! Stay cool.
