What's Hot

The Fabulous Spectrelles At the La Concha

by Valerie Ridenour

I've learned that the La Concha is the only hotel in the entire Crowne Plaza chain that still has entertainment. There's an excellent reason for that, They have one of the country's foremost cabaret acts, the Fabulous Spectelles on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Spectrelles have played everywhere here and in Europe to rave reviews, and their CD is still selling well in England. Three divinely talented people, Allison Mayer, Penny Jampol, and Mario Duval are the Fabulous Spectrelles.

Allison and Penny are dancers. Both teach. Allison was with the Joffrey Ballet in New York. Mario has a marvelous voice and recently turned down a major label recording contract. They have young children and prefer to stay here during school time.

Are you a fan of the great Sixties groups like the Supremes, the Shirrelles, the Temptations? If so, you're going to be thrilled. The three, all excellent singers and dancers do your favorites to fine tracks they recorded here.

In splashy sequins, huge hair wigs, spike heels, and tux, the group explodes on the stage. This is both a musical act and a floor show. The choreography is stunning.

The Motown sound grabs you with the first number, "Da Doo Run Run". "He's My Guy (he's a rebel)" is great, followed by the Del Viking's "Come Go With Me". These folks are real pros, two beautiful girls, a blonde and a brunette and a Latin hunk. When they're on stage, it's show time!

"Going to the Chapel" is dedicated to those getting married, divorced, or just thinking about it. "The Boy From New York City" proves that these folks are even better than the originals. The enthusiastic crowd sings along. A segue leads into "Please, Mr. Postman".

This is a show you never get tired of. They always do something new. Nobody wiggles like a Spectrelle. They are cute and sexy in their short dresses. "He's So Fine" is a delight. "Let's See About Me" has the audience rushing to the dance floor, the aisles, anywhere there's room. Mario devastates us with the Temp's "Get Ready". Then "Baby, Baby, ain't too proud to beg" segues into "I Got Sunshine On a Cloudy Day". "My Girl", "My Guy", the hits roll on. The harmony is perfection. Every move, every gesture is great.

"Iko Iko" is always a huge hit. The crowd goes crazy everytime. "Knock On Wood" and "Where the Boys Are" bring ahs of pleasure. "Shout" is a trip. I leave on "Dancing In the Street", and that's what the fans who couldn't get a seat inside were doing!

If you love good music and a great show, don't miss the Fabulous Spectrelles. Tell them Valerie sent you.

Stay cool.
