Some Personal Thoughts About Our National Tragedy

Like many of you, my first reaction to the televised terrorism we all saw on TV Tuesday was disbelief. It was like watching a disaster movie. But it was real. Too real.

Back in the 60s, one of my first jobs out of college was in New York City. I worked at AT&T headquarters at 195 Broadway. I lived in New Jersey and, back then, it was possible to commute to lower Manhattan via ferry boat. I could walk from the pier to my office— right past those big holes in the ground that would soon become the World Trade Center. I was able to see those towers being born. And Tuesday, we all saw them die.

The tragedy of the past week is so huge that most of us simply can't get our minds around it. Our hearts hurt for the loved ones of the victims. But our disbelief and sorrow is now merging with another emotion. Anger. We can only hope that, this time, our leaders will not wimp out. We hope that they will give a whole new meaning to the phrase: "Payback is a bitch!"

Let's watch together. God bless America!
