Tribute To Heroes At Martello Sunday

Dozens of local businesses, musicians, artists, restaurants and others will be participating in a memorial concert and auction this Sunday, September 23, to benefit the families of the firemen, police and rescue workers lost in the World Trade Cemter disaster. The benefit, which will feature a silent auction, food, drink and entertainment from at least 11 local musical groups, will be staged behind the East Martello Museum on South Roosevelt Boulevard, Noon `til 10 p.m. Admission to the concert is free, but there will be plenty of food, drink and goodies to buy.

"Everything is being donated," said Jeff Salzmann, one of the event organizers, "so 100 percent of what we take in will go to the families of the heroes." Businesses or individuals who wish to donate or participate should call 292-0507.

Vollmert-Oosterhoudt Feud Escalates

City Commissioner Tom Oosterhoudt has filed a formal complaint with Code Enforcement, alleging that Les Vollmert, chairman of the City's Historic Architectural Review Commission (HARC), is illegally renting unlicensed units at his guesthouse, Knowles House. Knowles House's website promotes the availability of eight units. But Carolyn Walker, the City's licensing official, said that the business has only two licensed units.

Both Vollmert and HARC member Sharon Wells have been publicly feuding with Oosterhoudt since he called for their removal from the board, accusing them of acting like "dictators." In a letter published on page one of Solares Hill two weeks ago, Vollmert not only called Oosterhoudt a liar, he took the newspaper to task for failing to solicit his input before publishing what he considered a scurrilous article on August 31.

KWTN faxed Vollmert on Monday, asking about the illegal units allegations. At presstime he had not responded to our request for comment.
