After being hit hard by Legislative budget cuts this summer, Florida Keys Community College is preparing for yet another blow from Tallahassee: a 3-5% hold back in funds for this year.
"We were already struggling to keep afloat with our dismal budget allocations, and now we get this news," remarked FKCC President, Dr. William A. Seeker. Seeker added "It really hurts, but we're gearing up for what could amount to a $300,000 budget cut this year."
Due to the State's announcement, the college formed an internal Budgetary Review Taskforce to review all areas of the college with a special focus on non-instructional areas. One of those areas currently under review is the theater at the Tennessee Williams Fine Arts Center.
The result of these budget cuts for some community colleges may be employee layoffs and reduced course offerings to students. Seeker remarked "The last thing we want to do is start laying people off. We're going to prepare for the worse, but we'll have a clearer picture by September 13, when the State 's General Revenue Estimating Conference is held.
