Lois Ryan, former director of the district mosquito control district here, was honored Monday
evening at the regular meeting of the Mosquito Control Board. Ryan retired in the early 90s after 41 years with
the district. She was the first woman to ever direct a mosquito control district in Florida. Ryan was
accompanied to the ceremony by long-time friend Monroe County Mayor Emeritus Wilhelmina Harvey.
Former Mayor Shirley Freeman has agreed to chair the Cultural Umbrella if the Board of County Commissioners adopts a resolution to transfer the administration of the Tourist Development Council Cultural Umbrella from the Federated Chambers of Commerce to the Florida Keys Council of the Arts. The resolution goes before the County Commission of August 15-16. As mayor of Monroe County, Freeman built a reputation as a staunch supporter of the arts. In addition to serving as Mayor and TDC Board Member, she was the County Commissioner appointed to the Arts Council and also served as the Arts Coordinator for the Monroe County School District.
In another development, David Cohn, a current member of the Cultural Umbrella Board,
announced his support for the change in administration of the Umbrella from the Federated Chambers to the
Florida Keys Council of the Arts.
Florida Keys Community College is now registering students for Fall Term classes, which begin August 27. FKCC's Fall Schedule is on line at www.fkcc.cc.
