Navy: Expect "Elevated Noise" Through April 9

The skies over Naval Air Station Key West will be host to an E-2 Hawkeye Squadron from March 30 until April 9. The pilots will be preparing for deployment on board aircraft carriers by Field Carrier Landing Practices (FCLPs). FCLPs are commonly called "touch and goes" because that is what the aircraft seems to do. Aircrews are perfecting skills needed to make day and night landings on carrier decks. Pilots must catch the arresting gear on the flight deck with the tailhook of the aircraft. A successful "trap" stops the aircraft safely on the short runway of the carrier. FCLPs may be flown until 10 p.m. to give crews plenty of time to practice night carrier landings which is one of the most difficult feats a crew or pilot is required to perform.

Residents can expect elevated noise during these flight practices. Info: 293-2425 or 293-2434.
