Palm Sale This Weekend At Nancy's Secret Garden

KWTN Team Report

In what has become a Key West tradition, Nancy Forrester's Secret Garden will be holding an exotic palm sale this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 3-4. Local and visiting gardeners will have an opportunity to buy from the collection of world-renowned palm and rain forest expert Jeff Searle.

In addition to the plant sale, horticulturist David McLean, from Broward Community College, will be conducting tours of the garden on Saturday, 11-4. Local experts will conduct tours on Sunday, 11-4.

"David McLean is a captivating lecturer who can communicate the allure of tropical plants to the most hardened avoider of gardens while, at the same time, providing new insights to the experienced plant lover," said Forrester.

Palm fanciers are known as the most fanatical of gardeners— the keenest of whom can justly be called "Palmaholics." There is something seductive about the palm, evoking the south seas or a shimmering oasis.

The palm sale this weekend will have something for everyone— the novice who has not yet succumbed to palm fever, as well as the true Palmaholic, who will be able to feed his or her lust for new and exotic species.

Searle will be offering rare palms from Borneo, Costa Rica, New Caledonia, New Guinea and Thailand, plus select sycads, aroids and new exotic Thai cordylines.

Forrester said that some of the most asked-for palms will be available, including Licuala Grandia, Cuban Hairy old man palms, and red-stemmed sealing wax palms.

Hours of the event are 9-5 on Saturday and 9-4 on Sunday. There is a $6 admission charge for both adults and children. Members free.

The Secret Garden is located at 1 Free School Lane, a little alley in the 500 block of Simonton.
