The Pirates Are Here!

Key West's Historic Seaport has been transformed into a Caribbean pirates' stronghold of days gone by.

Visitors to the Seaport's Pirate Fest and Village Thieves' Market will have the opportunity to step back in time and meet the likes of Calico Jack, Anne Bonny, Mary Read, Black Cesar and other intrepid navigators and nefarious Brethren of the Coast.

Over 100 historic reenactors, improvisational actors and combative stuntmen (all bedecked in colorful pirate garb!) will invade the Historic Seaport, bringing to life these characters and others from the golden Age of Piracy. Pirate troupes scheduled to perform include Time Foolery, On The Lamb, Pyrates of Tortuga and the Corsairs.

The Village Thieves' Market will feature lots of pirate booty, vintage vittles and grog, and wares from some of America's finest period artists and crafters, including exquisite handcrafted leatherwork, jewelry, pottery, glass, fibers, photography and paintings. There will also be several outdoor stages that will feature non-stop entertainment by such national acts as the Corsairs, Jeff Cahill, Magician Brother Paul, Sir Timothy the Mariner, Jim Greene, the Rat Pucker and Empty Hats, formally Double Indemnity.

At the Seaport's Education Tent, authors, scholars and historians will captivate one and all with their stories of shipwrecks, adventure and piracy on the high seas. Festival attendees will also have the chance to participate in an historically accurate reenactment of the Pyrate Tryals of Bonny and Read.

Special events include Schooner Wharf's Pillage & Plunder INvasion Party tonight, Friday, Dec. 1; Conch Republic Seafood Co.'s Buccaneer Bash, Pirate Parade & Pub Stroll tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 2; Schooner Wharf Bar's Jolly Roger Dinghy Race and Turtle Kraals' scurvy Crew Shipwreck Party on Sunday, Dec. 3.

Children of all ages will delight in searching the Harborwalk for chests of trinkets and treasures and are sure to be mesmerized by strolling pirates and fight circles; magicians and storytellers, and rugged minstrels singing sea shanties and songs of the sea. Located throughout the Seaport will be living history pirate encampment featuring net makers, weavers and games of chance, including Pin the Parrot on the Pirate.

About 5 p.m. today, Friday, Key West's fleet of tall ships will participate in a pirate battle in Key West Harbor off Fort Zachary Taylor. Watch the action from Ft. Zach or bribe your way onto one of the boats. Info: 296-9653.
