It Ain't Over

Hurricane season ain't over, warn Key West Emergency Management officials. They say that you should not allow the last few weeks of storm inactivity lull you into dangerous complacency. Scientists say the temporary weather phenomena causing the lull may be reversing themselves. October can be an especially active hurricane month for Florida. So, officials say, keep your hurricane plans and supplies ready.

Toys For Tots Golf

Key West area differs can enjoy a great day of golf, free food and prizes, while helping raise money to buy Christmas presents for needy kids. The annual Key West Police Department Toys for Tots golf tournament kicks off at the Key West Golf Club with an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday, Oct. 15. It's a four-person handicap scramble. The tournament is the major fundraiser enabling volunteers to buy and deliver Christmas gifts to at least 200 needy children in Key West.

The $100 entry fee includes greens fees, a cart, continental breakfast at sign-in, lunch at the turn, beverages on the course and an awards banquet at the 19th hole. A cornucopia of prizes has been generously donated. The top four teams will split $1,600 cash.

Gift recipients are screened by the Salvation Army. Stores discount the toys and gift wrappings. Volunteers will wrap the gifts at a festive wrapping party on Dec. 15 and on the 17th Santa and Mrs. Claus, riding in a fire engine, will deliver them to the families' doorsteps.

Persons who wish to volunteer, donate money for toys or donate tournament prizes may call Ellie Barker at 292-8137.
