The annual Tradesman & Tradeswoman Appreciation Day is set for this Monday afternoon, Sept. 25, at the Green Parrot Bar, 4-7. You don't even have to have a job to get one of the Parrot's official Tradesman/Tradeswoman passes, complete with photo and lamination.
THE LADY "A" BLUES BAND returns to the Schooner Wharf Bar tomorrow night, Saturday, Sept. 23, 7 `til Midnight. Critics describe her Harmonica work as "strong and raunchy".
Theatrical innovator Arthur Kopit is to step into the spotlight as the featured guest playwright at the ninth annual Key West Theatre Festival, Oct. 5-15. The critically acclaimed festival also will feature nightly world-premiere performances of new playwrights' work, afternoon play readings, a Broadway Pops Concert, displays of artwork by emerging artists, and a series of cabaret shows.
Opening and closing night galas and a "meet the playwrights" celebration round out the schedule of events.
Kopit's recent achievements include writing the book for the Tony Award-winning musical "Nine" and, most recently, the book for the musical "High Society."
Recognized for flouting theatrical conventions, Kopit authored such parodies as 1960s "Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sad." His other masterworks include "The Day the Whores Came Out to Play Tennis" and "Indians," which uses "Buffalo Bill" Cody's Wild West extravaganza as a framework.
Kopit is to host the festival's 2000 Playwright's Forum, scheduled for noon Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Waterfront Playhouse. The free-form discussion is also to feature festival playwrights Michael McKeever, Adam Kraar, Joe Godfrey and Fred Silver.
The Key West Theatre Festival is presented by Theatre Key West in conjunction with the island city's theaters. Tickets for world-premiere plays can be purchased in advance or at the theatre one hour before performance. Cost is $20. Info: 292-3725.
Dr. Hook, who fronted one of the top bands of the 1970s, will perform here during Fantasy Fest on Ocean Key Resort's Sunset Pier, zero Duval St. Dr. Hook, featuring Ray Sawyer, are scheduled to perform after the Fantasy Fest parade on Friday evening, Oct. 27. One of Hook's biggest hits was "Cover of the Rolling Stone," written by the late Key Wester, Shel Silverstein.
