Key West Teacher Gets National Certification

SIGSBEE TEACHER IS ONE OF 8 IN COUNTY TO MEET STRINGENT REQUIREMENTS; ONE OF 546 STATEWIDE

One Key West teacher was included in a list of eight Monroe County teachers who have achieved national certification, said School Superintendent Michael Lannon. She is Wendelynn McPherson, who teaches at Sigsbee School.

Nationally-certified teachers must demonstrate their knowledge and skills through a series of performance-based assessments that include portfolios, student work samples, videotapes and a thorough analysis of classroom teaching and student learning.

Teachers who achieve national certification earn a $3,500 salary bonus, plus an additional $3,500 bonus if they mentor other teachers.

McPherson was one of 546 Florida teachers who met national accreditation standards. Florida ranks second in the nation for number of certified teachers.
