Sloppy Joe's Gears Up For Hemingway's Birthday Party

Sloppy Joe¹s will hold its 22nd Annual Hemingway Look-Alike contest July 18-21. This year¹s event benefits the Monroe County Foster Adoptive Parents Association.

It was 1928 when Ernest Hemingway sailed from Paris to Havana to board a ship for the 90-mile journey to Key West. It had been a cold wet winter in Paris and Hemingway, along with his second wife, was seeking warmth. Hemingway had hoped to dry out his old bones in Key West, while writing, fishing and hanging with his friends.

A place known for sponging, commercial fishing and the cigar industry, Key West was not a cultural place at all. Hemingway would change that.

In celebration of the author¹s birthday, Sloppy Joe¹s will host the annual Hemingway Look-A-Contest, which began in 1981, and has since turned into a weeklong celebration honoring Heming-way as both writer and sportsman. The contest brings 100 plus bearded men from all over the world to Key West each July. Contestants will be called on stage to say a few words of goodwill. Dressed in Hemingway garb, contestants wear safari outfits, khakis, and even the excruciatingly hot wool fisherman¹s turtleneck sweaters. Many competitors return year after year and bring support by way of cheering sections.

Although the contest doesn't begin until 7pm each night, spectators (and some contestants) arrive early in the afternoon to check out competition.

Preliminary rounds are Thursday, July 18 and Friday, July 19 at 7:00pm. Check in time is at 5:30 each night, contestants may pre-register or register at either preliminary round. Look-Alikes must compete in one of the preliminary round in order to be eligible for the finals.

Finals round of contest is Saturday, July 20th at 7pm.

Sloppy Joe¹s will fill with spectators and television crews will jockey for the best camera angle. To help accommodate the crowd a 10-foot x 13-foot diamond screen television will be set up on Greene street for spectators over flowing into the street.

The judging is handled by the Hemingway Society which is made up of former Look-A-Likes and hopefuls. This year the society will have 15 voting members who are previous winners to judge the contest.

Other events include the "Running of the Bulls" Saturday, July 20 at 1pm, followed by the Key Lime Pie eating contest at 2pm.

The Arm Wrestling Championship is the finale to the event, Sunday, July 21, at 1pm.
