Relocation Of Unwanted Chickens Continuing— Without Tax Dollars

by Katha Sheehan

The Rooster Rescue Team's Chicken relocation effort is continuing. More than 40 chickens were moved out of Key West this past week.

Cost to taxpayers: Nothing.

Twenty-six chickens were adopted by Duffy Coulton of Lehigh Acres, three chicks to a couple from Seminole four chicks to a groundskeeper on Big Pine, and two young pullets to a homeowner on Cudjoe Key, and two hens to a Stock Island resident who wanted their companionship.

A gentleman who lives at Porter Place was refused adoption of two chicks. The Housing Authority does not want more chickens. The recently departed Ellie Nodine was a very caring and humane trapper of the abandoned and sometimes abused chickens which overrun the premises. Rooster Rescue relocated many chickens she trapped to new homes. She will be missed.

Some of the chickens that went to Lehigh Acres were youngsters left behind by Kenneth Herrick-Cross, the late Chicken Man of Whitehead St. Two of his pullets are still at the Chicken Store, awaiting adoption.

A robust hen with five older chicks was additionally released in a wooded area of the lower Keys where she successfully joined the resident colony of two feral roosters.

The Chicken Store has adopted out at minimum five chickens every week since its inception, which would come to a total of at lest 390 chickens relocated since its doors were opened.
