DANNY MORRIS and his band is at the Green Parrot Bar tonight, Friday, August 10, through this Sunday, August 12, 10-2. This is one of Key West's favorite out-of-town bands. One music crtic wrote: "Danny Morris has taken a blues background, tossed in `60s surf guitar and garage band rock, along with a touch of this and a little of that to create a unique and appealing sound."
The opening of lobster season will once again be celebrated with a 10-hour street party, tomorrow, Saturday, August 11. Duval Street between Front and Caroline will be closed for the party from 2 p.m. `til midnight. The highlight of the event will be the availability of $15 lobster dinners cooked and served from open-air kitchens right on the street. Lots of booze, too. Last year, an estimated 3,500 people consumed 500 pounds of lobster. Live entertainment on a stage in the middle of the block will feature out-of-town and local bands and entertainers including the Gumbo Boogie Band, Cool Breeze, Lenny's Reggae Party and Tony Rasta. There will also be an antique car and motorcycle show.
Sales of the 2001 Lobsterfest t-shirts will benefit the Key West High School Scholarship Fund. Last year's event contributed $3000 to this fund. Over the last four years, 16 students interested in business or careers in the hospitality industry, have received scholarships through this fund.
Larry Smith will be showcasing musician Jerry Hendrix at this week's Sunday Showcase, August 12 at 10 p.m., in The Galley at the Pier House.
