KWTN received several calls this week, reporting a rumor that City Manager Julio Avael was
planning to leave Key West to take a job in Sarasota. No such luck. A source inside City Hall quoted Avael
as saying he was offered the job, but turned it down.
City Electric System is conducting its annual free tree giveaway this Saturday, June 30.
Approximately 3,000 trees will be given away, limit two to a customer, on a first come first served basis, 8:30
a.m. to 11 a.m. Two locations: The CES Service Building in Key West at James and Grinnell Streets; and up
the Keys at the Cudjoe diesel site on Blimp Road, Cudjoe Key.
It's still "Locals Month" at most of the Historic Tours of America attractions here. Through this Saturday, June 30, you can show proof of residency in Monroe County and get in free at the Key West Aquarium, Key West Shipwreck Historeum, Flagler Station Over-sea Railway Historeum, Harry S. Truman Little White House and the Schooner Western Union. Reservations are required for the Western Union and complimentary admission for locals is for the day sail only. Reservations: 292-1766. Locals can also sign up for their Hometown Pass, which gives locals free admission anytime of the year with a paying guest. Applications are available at all of the attractions. This Saturday is also a special free-admission day at the Key West Museum of Art & History in
the old Custom House, at Front and Greene Streets.
Vincent Zito and his Key West Pops Orchestra will present yet another spectacular concert this Sunday, July 1, at 7:30 p.m., at the Tennessee Williams Fine Arts Center. Entitled "Divas on Broadway," the show will highlight the great musical theater numbers, including tunes from Guys and Dolls, Cabaret, Bye-Bye Birdie, and Annie Get Your Gun. A variety of voices insure an exciting evening.
Key West's favorite torch singer, Melody Cooper, will be joined by sweet soprano Maria Zito-Kaufman and a genuine Broadway belter, Donna Buonauro, both from New Jersey. The warm, clear tones of mezzo-soprano Heather Carruthers will round out the divine group of diva. A 35-piece Broadway pit band will make you feel like you're in NYC.
