Winston Burrell, who founded Island News a couple of years ago, promised Miami Red Cross officials that he would give up the paper if they would give him a fulltime job hustling contributions here. They did. But Burrell may or may not have kept his part of the bargain. Island News came out as usual last Friday morning but nobody was listed on the masthead as either editor or publisher. People all over town were left wondering: "Who publishes this newspaper?"
Mystery solved. The near-empty masthead notes that the publication is copyrighted by Winsand Inc. That's Winston and Sandy. Burrell is married to Judge Sandy Taylor.
The lead story in last Friday's Island
News? A fawning feature on the American Red Cross.
Imagine that.
Reef Relief has proposed the creation of a Key West Marine Park which would include no-motor swim areas in the near-shore waters from the Pier House around the island to the White Street Pier. Markers would be installed to protect swimmers from boat traffic. Marked lanes would allow vessels to approach the shoreline at the Casa Marina pier and near the Atlantic Shores pier on the oceanside of the island.
These no-swim areas have already been temporarily marked. Reef Relief is requesting public
input. Comments may be mailed to P O Box 430, Key West, FL 33041, or emailed to reef@bellsouth.net.
