ELLARD-JAMES "MOOSE" BOLES and his Bulletproof Blues Band will be at the Schooner Wharf Bar tonight and tomorrow night, Friday and Saturday, June 1-2, 7- Midnight. A veteran blues singer, writer and musician, Boles has toured, recorded and jammed throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe with such legendary performers as Lou Reed, Greg Allman, Stevie Ray Vaughan, David Bowie, the Dixie Cups and Big "J" McNeely. The band is based in New York City.
The amazing Guitar Shorty will be at the Green Parrot Bar Wednesday night, June 6, 10-2. When he's not turning somersaults, doing backwards flips and standing on his head all while playing, of course he's prone to cutting loose with savagely slashing licks on his instrument. He says his penchant for stage gymnastics was inspired by the flamboyant Guitar Slim, whose wild antics are legendary. Trivia notes: Shorty married Jimi Hendrix's stepsister in the 60s. He also won first prize on the old Gong Show when he played "They Call Me Guitar Shorty" while balanced on his noggin.
Pianist Jeffrey Chappell returns to Key West Tuesday evening, June 5, to star in a special summer Impromptu Concert sponsored by the Key West Council on the Arts. The concert starts at 8 p.m. at St. Paul's Church, Duval at Eaton.
The theme of the concert is "Music of Two Worlds" the juxtaposing of musical styles of classical Europe and modern America.
The program presents such classical melodic masterworks as the short, lovely Beethoven Sonata Opus 78, Schubert's imposing "Wanderer" Fantasy, and Tchaikovsky's sunny "June" Barcarolle. In provocative contrast, Chappell performs the three jazzy Gershwin Preludes, Samuel Barber's excitingly intense Sonata #26, and his own composition, the much-praised Chappell Jazz Sonata.
Chappell's career has been far-ranging. Soloist with the Philadelphia, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Houston and other Symphonies, he is a particularly frequent featured artist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He has also received the Solo Recitalist Award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Tickets for the Chappell Music of Two Worlds concert are $20, at the door. Young people under 19 are admitted free. Seats are unreserved in St. Paul's, so concert-goers who prefer up-front seating are advised to come early.
