Navy E-2 Hawkeye turboprop aircraft will take to the skies over Naval Air Station Key West
starting today, Friday, May 11, through Thursday, May 24. The aircrews will be completing field carrier
landing practice maneuvers and may be flying from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m., according to a press release sent out
by the Navy Tuesday. Aircraft carrier landings are among the most challenging tasks Navy pilots face.
The training they receive here realistically simulates both day and night carrier landings.
This coming Thursday, May 17 at 7 p.m., local historian Tom Hambright will present a slide
show about the military in Key West and the Florida Keys before, during and after World War II. Hambright
will be addressing the Key West Maritime Historical Society in the Key West library auditorium. The event
is open to the public. The presentation will cover changes to the Keys, the war in and around the Keys
and Cuba, and the contributions of the local military to the war effort. He will also show some of the
long-term effects of the war on life in the Florida Keys. The library is closed on Thursday evening, so use the
rear entrance to the auditorium.
The Post Office is delivering the new edition of the Official Conch Republic Phone Book. If you need more copies, call 292-3701, said former Key West Mayor Tom Sawyer, who publishes the book.
