B.O. Celebrates 6 Years At the Bight. Party On Sunday

by Barbara Bowers

BO'sFish Wagon has enough funk and patina to be an original part of the Historic Key West Bight. The vintage truck at the entrance appears to have rusted in place since the 1940's. The old fish traps and nets and buoys look as if they became entangled with the shack during the Great Hurricane of 1935.

Only the new license plates tacked on the rafters and the newly sprouting foliage around the little eatery hint that Sunday's birthday party is something short of ancient.

This Sunday, March 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. Buddy Owens will celebrate his Fish Wagon's 6th anniversary at the corner of William and Caroline Streets.

"There's enough cake for everybody," said BO, designer and proprietor of the down-island food station that's world famous on this corner. "That means there's only one Fish Wagon— no franchises— and this is the only place you can find me and my buddies, because BO's friends always give me a hand"

The festivities also include birthday celebrations for Pat Daily and Uncle Clevie, two of BO's buddies who turn 60 and 80 years old, respectively.

"Barry Cuda and the Sharks (Steve Mello and Chief Billy) have been with me every Friday night since I opened here six years ago," said BO. "They'll be here jammin this Friday, too— but they'll come back for a special performance on Sunday for the birthday party."

The spontaneous human interaction inside the open-air hut is akin to the collection of stuff that mushrooms like barnacles on the Fish Wagon's facade. Locals and visitors contribute to the perpetual motion: "I must be doing something right cause I don't have time to fish anymore," said BO. "Oh, you still get fresh fish sandwiches; my boys are doing it for me."
