The Founders Society has returned the Nutcracker to the Key West stage by popular demand after the production was sold out two years ago. Dance Alive!, the State Touring Company of Florida, comes to Key West next Thursday and Friday, Dec. 21 and 22, to present three performances of Balanchine's classic ballet on stage at the Tennessee Williams Fine Arts Center.
Seventy-five lower Keys children were selected in a September audition, and they have been rehearsing in Kari's Dance Studio under the direction of owner Lynly Curry since September. The children will portray toy soldiers, mice, and participate in the big Victorian party of Act 1. In the Mother Goose scene, 10 young local gymnasts will come flying and flipping through the air.
Santa Claus will be on hand in the lobby for photographs with the children in front of the TWFAC Christmas tree before each performance. The Thursday performance will be at 8 p.m. and there are two Friday performances, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Dance Alive! is a professional dance company that does indeed live up to its name. Dance Alive! has developed into one of the most distinguished and creative ballet companies in the Southeast. Today recognized for its superb performances, choreography and education programming, Dance Alive! continues to represent Florida as the only ballet company on the State Tour program, and the company continues to perform in the Southeastern United States and Latin America.
