Key West Police are investigating two jewelry store robberies that took place two days apart, Nov. 3 and Nov. 5. About 4 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, thieves used a vehicle to pull the front doors off of Old Town Pawn, 1075 Duval St. A hammer was then used to smash a display case and, according to the initial police report, an estimated $2,000 in gold jewelry was taken.
Two nights later, robbers broke into a vacant store in Searstown Shopping Center, then dug through a wall and entered Searstown Jewelers next door. Numerous rings, bracelets and necklaces were taken, according to the police report.
Police will not comment on the investigation or whether the two robberies might be linked. But
they are looking for any relevant information from citizens. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 for any
tip that leads to an arrest in this case. Citizens with information should call the Crime Stoppers tips line at
1-800-346-TIPS (8477). You do not have to identify yourself. Detective Sgt. John Beuth (294-2511)
said that the Police Dept. is offering an additional reward.
Last Saturday, Veterans Day, in front of President Bill Clinton and other dignitaries, superstar Willy Nelson sang a song written by Key West singer-songwriter Michael McCloud. The event was the groundbreaking for the World War II Memorial. Earlier this year, McCloud was commissioned to write a song that will be used in fundraising efforts to finance the memorial. When the memorial opens in 2001, McCloud will be there to sing the song himself.
McCloud performs daily except Monday at the Schooner Wharf Bar. Drop by. We bet he'll sing it
for you.
