Theatre Festival Runs Through Oct. 15

The Key West Theatre Festival got underway last night and runs through Sunday, Oct. 15. Now in its ninth year, the festival showcases world-premiere plays by promising new playwrights.

Featured are evening performances and weekend matinees at two Key West theaters and an historic restaurant, free afternoon play readings, a seminar featuring Tony Award-winning playwright Arthur Kopit, after-theater cabaret shows, receptions and a Broadway Pops Concert.

Conceived in 1992 to recognize and spotlight the efforts of emerging playwrights, the festival celebrates Key West's creative spirit and heritage. Hundreds of plays are submitted each year to the festival's board and advisors, who select four plays to be produced. Criteria for selection include diversity of writing style and dramatic genre.

"Sexy and Miggs," written by Michael McKeever, is a romantic comedy featuring an offbeat duo who help each other along life's road. Adam Kraar's sensual drama, "The Spirit House," captures the magic and danger experienced by an American diplomat's family in 1965 Thailand. "Bed and Breakfast," by Joe Godfrey, blends comedy and drama as it explores the challenges faced by a group of house guests weekending in Provincetown, Mass. Fred Silver's "Good Little Girls," is an enticing musical in which three women bare their souls and reveal their successes and failures, with each ultimately discovering a new life.

Performances of "Sexy and Miggs" are to be staged at the Red Barn Theatre, 319 Duval St., Rear. "The Spirit House" and "Bed and Breakfast" are to premiere at the Waterfront Playhouse in Mallory Square.

"Good Little Girls" is to be produced at Kelly's Caribbean Bar, Grill & Brewery, 303 Whitehead St. Owned by actress Kelly McGillis of "Top Gun" fame, the restaurant was once the original office of Pan-American airways.

Another festival highlight is a Broadway Pops Concert slated to take place at 7:30 p.m. this Sunday, Oct. 8, at the Tennessee Williams Fine Arts Center.

The Theatre Festival's featured guest playwright, Tony Award-winner Arthur Kopit, is to host a Playwright's Forum at noon tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Waterfront Playhouse. Kopit is to lead the festival's playwrights in a free-form discussion with the audience, offering a rare chance to explore the craft of writing plays with both master and emerging talents.

The festival schedule also includes afternoon play readings slated for 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, Oct. 9-13, at the Waterfront Playhouse. After-theatre cabaret performances are set for 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6 and 7, and Wednesday through Sunday, Oct. 11-15. Showcasing top regional talents, the performances are to take place at the Rooftop Cafe, 310 Front St.

Other festival events include a Meet the Playwrights Party at 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Rooftop Cafe, and a Closing Night Gala at 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, at Kelly's Caribbean Bar, Grill & Brewery.
