Cops Cracking Down On Drunks, Speeders Over Holiday Weekend

Key West motorists are warned to be extra careful Friday night, Sept. 1, to early Saturday morning, Sept. 2. Key West police traffic safety officers are kicking off the Labor Day weekend with another of their special enforcement projects.

"We will be watching the main arteries from the `triangle' to downtown for aggressive drivers, intoxicated drivers, speeders and other dangerous drivers," said Officer Ed Stress, head of the Traffic Safety Division. He said that later in the night they will target downtown looking for bicycles without front and rear lights, double riders on scooters not designed for two persons, and any other traffic infractions.

This will also start the statewide Labor Day enforcement wave of the "Buckle Up Florida" campaign. The officers will be checking for safety belts and child restraint devices. The enforcement wave will continue through Sept. 10.

"As always, the officers will be highly visible in an effort to discourage potential violators," Stress added.

Persons with questions about the "Buckle Up Florida" campaign or the special enforcement project may call Officer Donny Barrios at 294-2511 or 293-8355.
