How To Help Solve Your Own Mosquito Problem

Mosquito Control Commissioner Bill Shaw points out that residents can help control mosquitoes around their own homes by eliminating mosquito breeding areas. Shaw said that anything that holds water can provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes— like saucers under flower pots, decorative conch shells, birdbaths, and even some plants, like bromeliads.

"Even holes in trees that can hold water can breed mosquitoes," he said. Hose them out a couple of times a week."

MOre obvious mosquito-breeding "containers" are boat hulls, empty buckets, open trash cans and old tires.

Residents who have a mosquito problem should call Mosquito Control at 1-800-276-7493 for assistance, Shaw said.
