Hot & Soul At Playhouse Through July 15

JULIA NIXON WILL PERFORM AT GOSPEL BRUNCH THIS SUNDAY

Back by popular demand, Broadway diva Julia Nixon stars in Hot & Soul— A 90-minute musical revue billed as "A new view of Broadway and the Blues." Last year, Nixon performed before sold-out houses here.

Described as a history of soul music— at least those songs that made it to Broadway, the Hot & Soul repertoire includes "Our Love Is Here To Stay," "Summertime," and "Fools Fall in Love." Nixon and her band will be joined by local drummer Skipper Krippitz.

Artistic director Scott Gilmore co-wrote the arrangement and will direct the show. Hot & Soul was conceived and written by Gilmore, Ylvisaker and Nixon.

Special this year, Nixon will perform with children from the Bahama Village Music Program. Directed by children's music professional Robin Kaplan, the choral group is being sponsored by the Key West Players' new children's program, the Bahama Village Theatre Lab Project.

Curtain is 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 and $25. Seating is limited. Info/reservations: 294-5015 or www.ticketweb.com.

GOSPEL BRUNCH

While Julia Nixon is in town for her Waterfront Playhouse performances, she'll also perform at special gospel brunch at Caribe Soul Restaurant, this Sunday, June 18.

Also performing at the gospel brunch will be the St. James Choir from St. James First Missionary Baptist Church in Bahama Village, directed by Michael Weston, co-owner of Caribe Soul and the church's minister of music.

There will be two seatings: 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tickets: $38 per person. Reservations: 296-0094.

Caribe Soul is located at 425 Grinnel at Fleming St.

Blues Legend Returns To Parrot

Blind Pig recording artist E. C. Scott returns to the Green Parrot stage this Wednesday, June 21, 10-2.

No less a music industry legend than Jerry Wexler, co-founder of Atlantic Records, called E. C. Scott "one honest-to-God soul singer." High praise indeed from the man who produced Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and Wilson Pickett!

Scott possesses a warm, inviting voice and a delivery that can be smooth and sultry one minute and sassy and sexy the next. She can mesmerize a crowd down to a whisper or rock them into a loud frenzy.

E.C.'s growing reputation allowed her to share the stage with Lou Rawls, Ray Charles, Patti La Belle, Jr. Walker and the All-Stars, John Lee Hooker, and the Ohio Players.

Scott's engaging, exciting stage presence makes her equally welcome at tony high-society gigs as well as the rowdiest blues dive. In one year alone, E.C. performed at Grand Openings for the San Francisco Symphony, the San Francisco Ballet, and the San Francisco Opera— and now she's coming to the Green Parrot.

Tomorrow, Saturday, June 17, Caffeine Carl & The Funky Beans hit the Parrot stage, 10-2. This band offers fully caffeinated rock, rhythm and blues from the land of the Double Buchi.

Father's Day Fun At Bayview Park

HAVE LUNCH FOR A BUCK

Wondering what to do for Dad this Father's Day? Grab your favorite "father-type" and head out to Bayview Park for a fun morning. The YMCA has planned a "Salute to Dads Picnic" for Saturday, June 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Bring your dad (or another adult you wish to honor) and participate in some fun games together and watch the entertainment while eating the picnic lunch you can purchase for $1 a plate.

The morning will start with a rousing kick-off by the Key West High school varsity and jr. varsity cheerleaders. Next join in some old fashioned games.

While you are eating lunch, the "Steel Your Heart" band will serenade you. The day will end with a demonstration by the kids from Island Gymnastics.

The first Father's Day was sponsored by the Spokane, Washington YMCA in June of 1910. Sonora Louise Smart created the day as a tribute to her father who raised her and her five siblings. So join the YMCA of Key West in saluting your dad.
