For Judge Steven Shea, it may not be over quite yet. After months of hearings and legal
maneuvering, the Florida Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that he should be removed from the bench for
misconduct.
Shea appealed, asking the Court for a rehearing. That appeal was rejected last week.
This week, Shea announced that he would appeal his ouster to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Florida Supreme Court has stayed its order for removal for 30 days.
From the outset, Shea has argued that virtually all of the charges against him were trumped up
by State Attorney Kirk Zuelch and his employees to punish Shea for refusing to accept Zuelch's phone calls
to discuss active cases.
County Commissioner Nora Williams was quoted in the Key West Citizen yesterday as saying that the county government has too many employees. Duh! During the commission's failed effort to take over the independently-elected Mosquito Control Board, the County Administrator admitted that his operation had an estimated $500,000 in "excess administrative capacity."
