Christmas On The Farm This Sunday

by Mary Powell

Christmas on the Farm will be held this Sunday from 1-3 p.m. for all the children and the kid in you. Santa will stop by and there will be pony cart rides for the youngsters, and fun for all ages.

The Farm is one of the special places in Key West for families and children. Even the animals are special, like Angel the blind horse and Judy the Cow (who was found tied to a parking meter in downtown Ft. Lauderdale a few years ago). Many of these animals are taken from abusive situations and brought to a safe place where they find peace and affection.

Along with the adult animals, including peacocks, a huge turkey, three cockatoos, pigs, horses, ponies and goats, there is also a animal nursery where a seven-day-old goat resides, along with baby bunnies and piglets.

"The trustees spend eight hours a day with the animals here," said Deana Rogowski, Animal Farm Specialist. "When they are released, many return on a regular basis to check on the animals they had in their care while they were incarcerated.

"And Veternarian Dr. Moder comes each month and gives a total hands-on health checkup to each of the animals," Rogowski said.

The Farm will soon be moving to another part of the property, she said. "We're planning very large stalls and walkways and more cover from the weather," she said.

Max Finally Finds A Good Home

by Mary Powell

Max wasn't supposed to meet his new family. Another dog named Princess was.

Said Ann, "We saw in your paper that a dog named Princess needed a home, so we went to see her. But, instead, they brought out Max.

"He was so gentle with Tommy that we brought him home to meet the rest of the family, including our puppy. And now he's here to stay!"

Ann said Max has gained almost 10 pounds since he's been with them, and that he and Tommy love to play together. "Max seems to know not to get too rough with Tommy," she said. (Tommy 's two and a half years old.)

You too can have a loyal, loving companion to add to your family. Call the Shelter at 294-4857 today!

There are lots of dogs and cats that really need good homes like Max found. If you can't make it to the Shelter on Stock Island, you can view some of the puppies for adoption at Keys Pet Market in the Overseas Marketplace. And if you can't adopt, maybe you could volunteer at the shelter.

The shelter is also offering gift certificates from $5 to $500 that will buy food, toys and building materials for the shelter-- a great gift for the animal-lovers on your list.

The Shelter is open from Mon-Fri, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., and on Saturday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Come on out and visit with the animals. And if you adopt, please make a lifetime commitment. Your animal will make one to you.
