City Electric officials say they're not worried about the Y2K bug and they don't want you to be worried either. To that end, the Utility Board has changed the traditional City Electric employee New Year's holiday from Friday, Dec. 31, to Jan. 3.
"It is important to the community that we are open and ready to answer any questions regarding the Year 2000 roll over," stated Raymond Rodriguez, general manager. "Our presence at City Electric's offices on New Year's Eve may provide additional assurances to our customers who may be concerned about Y2K."
Everyone in Key West is invited to kick off the holidays with a gala City Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony this coming Monday, Nov. 29, at 6 p.m., at Bayview Park.
The City of Key West is getting into the holiday spirit by displaying a beautiful holiday tree at the corner of Truman Avenue and Jose Marti Drive. The 25-foot artificial tree, with lights and ornaments already attached, is the gift of the Key West Golf Club and Pritham Singh. City Commissioner Harry Bethel, who promoted the idea, will throw the switch.
Carolling will be led by the combined choirs of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and Peace Covenant Presbyterian Church, under the direction of Joseph Lowe.
The city's annual Holiday Parade will march by the tree starting at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, followed on Sunday, Dec. 11, with the city-sponsored Children's Holiday Festival at Bayview Park from 1-5 p.m.
Costs for all three holiday events are covered by donations from local businesses and individuals, with city employees and their friends and families volunteering their time to staff them.
