The Florida Keys Citizens' Coalition has resolved to await the results of the upcoming Monroe County survey on tourism before proceeding with other political options, including a petition drive to repeal the Tourist Development Tax.
"The voters of Monroe County created this tax and they should be given the opportunity to give direction on how it should be spent," said Eugene Shinkevich, chairman of the organization which represents civic groups from Key Largo to Key West.
"We are satisfied that the public's response will demonstrate that the County Commission should amend their ordinances to allow greater spending on local projects to improve the cultural and natural environment in the Keys."
The resolution in support of the survey was presented to County Commissioners prior to their approval this month to solicit public response from all registered voters. The resolution calls for the commission to introduce amendments to increase spending on local projects within sixty days of publication of the results, should the voters indicate a clear preference for that change.
Should the County Commission fail to follow the wishes of the voters, the Coalition will proceed with plans to place a referendum on the ballot to repeal the three cent promotional tax, Shinkevich said. A political action committee will be established for the purpose of organizing the petition drive.
